What Really Happens to Your Solar Panels When They Come Off Your Roof?
Australia has one of the highest rates of rooftop solar adoption in the world - but less than 5% of end-of-life solar panels are currently recycled. The rest are stockpiled, sent to landfill, or shipped interstate with the freight costs quietly passed on to you.
At Enhance Electrical & Solar, we've made a deliberate choice to do things differently. Every panel we remove is diverted from landfill - and through our partnership with a trusted local Queensland provider, most are given a genuine second life powering homes and communities in Africa.
No hidden costs. No vague assurances. Just the right thing, done properly.

Australia's Solar Recycling Problem - And What We're Doing About It
Solar panels are built to last 25–30 years. The first wave of Australia's rooftop solar boom is now reaching the end of its life -- and four million panels are coming off Australian rooftops every year. The uncomfortable truth is that the industry has been slow to deal with what happens next.
Currently, less than 5% of those panels are recycled despite the fact that over 95% of a panel's materials - including glass, aluminium, copper, silver and silicon - are fully recoverable.
Most removed panels end up stockpiled, tipped into landfill, or shipped interstate to processing facilities, with the costs often passed directly to homeowners without explanation.
Responsible disposal currently costs around $30-70 per panel - roughly six times the cost of landfill. Some installers absorb this. Many don't. And few are transparent about it.
At Enhance Electrical & Solar, responsible end-of-life management is built into how we operate. We've partnered with a local Queensland-based organisation that gives your decommissioned panels a genuine second life.
The Problem With "Standard" Solar Panel Disposal
When most solar installers remove your old system, the panels disappear without much explanation. In the best cases, they're sent to interstate processing facilities - but the freight and handling costs are often billed back to you. In the worst cases, they go straight to landfill, which is the cheapest option and, in most Australian states, still technically legal.
This matters because solar panels contain materials that don't break down safely. Glass, polymer back sheets, lead-based soldering and small quantities of heavy metals need to be handled carefully - not buried and forgotten. As Australia's regulatory framework catches up (and it is catching up fast), the companies that have been cutting corners will face increasing pressure.

Most end up stockpiled, landfilled or exported with little oversight

Landfill bans are now in place or coming in most states
Responsible disposal costs ~$30-70/panel vs $4.50 for landfill
What makes Enhance Electrical & Solar Different - What we do with your Solar Panels
Through our partnership with a trusted local Queensland provider, decommissioned panels removed from homes across Moreton Bay and North Brisbane are carefully assessed, packaged and transported to communities in Africa - where they are refurbished and put to work providing clean energy access.
In many parts of Africa, electricity supply is unreliable or simply non-existent. A working solar panel isn't an upgrade - it's transformative. It powers lights for children studying at night, refrigeration for medicines, and connectivity that opens up education and economic opportunity.
This isn't token charity. It's deliberate, practical reuse - and it means your old system continues doing what it was designed to do: generate clean energy for real people.
When a panel isn't suitable for reuse, our partner directs it to the most responsible material recovery pathway available. Nothing goes to landfill by default. Nothing is buried and forgotten.

Got questions about what happens to your old panels? Here's everything you need to know — and the Enhance Electrical & Solar team is always happy to talk you through it.
Australia currently lacks the processing infrastructure to recycle most solar panel components at scale. Only about 17% of panel materials - the aluminium frame and junction box - can be easily processed locally. The remaining 83%, including the glass, silicon and polymer sheets, requires specialist facilities. This is why panels so often end up in landfill or are shipped interstate, where costs mount quickly. Australia is moving toward a national recycling solution, but it's not there yet - which is why responsible reuse through partners like ours is the best available option.
No. At Enhance Electrical & Solar, responsible panel disposal is built into how we operate - not an add-on cost. Some installers charge customers separately for interstate freight and processing. We don't. When you get a quote from us, there are no hidden disposal fees.
Yes - and the distinction matters. Our local partner operates within the framework of Australian export regulations and international guidelines. The panels are sent for reuse, not disposal - which is an entirely different category legally and ethically. Reuse extends the working life of a product and provides genuine benefit to receiving communities. Our partner has established community relationships and transparent processes. This is not dumping; it's deliberate, responsible reuse.
The regulatory landscape is changing rapidly. Queensland launched a $5.5M Solar Panel Stewardship pilot in 2024. Victoria has banned solar panels from landfill since 2019. Western Australia introduced e-waste regulations prohibiting solar panel landfill disposal in July 2024. NSW passed the Product Lifecycle Responsibility Act 2025. Federally, the government announced $24.7M for a National Solar Panel Recycling Pilot in 2026, and the Basel Convention e-waste amendment regulating international panel movement entered force January 2025. Choosing a provider already operating responsibly means you're ahead of these changes - not scrambling to comply with them.
Our team holds Queensland Electrical Work Licences, Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA) accreditation for Grid Connected PV, Battery Storage and Stand Alone Power Systems, ARCtick refrigerant handling authorisation, and we adhere to the New Energy Tech Consumer Code (NETCC). All solar components we install appear on the Clean Energy Council's approved products list, ensuring your system qualifies for the federal STC (solar rebate). Certificates of Electrical Safety are issued for all notifiable electrical work.
That's exactly the right question to ask any installer. We work with a local Queensland partner who has established logistics and community distribution channels specifically for this purpose - not a general waste contractor. We're happy to provide details about how the program works when you book your consultation. Transparency is part of what makes this program worth talking about.
Some do - and it's worth asking before you book anyone. When a solar installer removes your old panels, they have to do something with them. Responsible disposal isn't free. In Queensland, there are no local processing facilities capable of handling end-of-life solar panels at scale, which means panels typically need to be freighted to Melbourne - the closest city with appropriate recycling infrastructure. That freight alone can be a significant cost, and some installers pass it directly to the customer, either as a line item on the quote or buried in the overall price.
The processing cost at a Melbourne facility runs at approximately $30-70 per panel. Add interstate freight from Southeast Queensland, and a homeowner replacing a standard 20-panel system could be looking at a meaningful out-of-pocket disposal cost on top of their new installation price - often without being told upfront that this is coming.
At Enhance Electrical & Solar, we don't send panels to Melbourne and we don't pass disposal costs on to you. Because we work with a local Queensland reuse partner who gives your panels a second life in Zimbabwe and other parts of Africa, the economics are different and our customers don't foot the bill for doing the right thing.
If you're comparing quotes, always ask: "What happens to my old panels, and is there a disposal charge?" The answer will tell you a lot about the company you're dealing with.
